A national trade association representing $60 billion concrete industry

 

Executive Vice President, Structures and Sustainability

 

Responsible for developing and implementing strategic marketing plans to increase market share of concrete through communications, promotion, education and advocacy.

  • Developed and successfully implemented the Build with Strength initiative, a $6 million per year marketing and promotion program to increase market share of concrete construction.

  • Increased market share of concrete in building applications by 16% in 7 years.

  • Led a team of 14 high-performing engineers, architects and sales professionals responsible for expanding and improving the use of concrete in building applications through education, research, communications and building code advocacy.

  • Managed programs to assist concrete producers, contractors, and designers to improve the sustainability of concrete manufacturing and construction.

  • Developed and managed programs to assist concrete producers implement sustainable manufacturing practices including Product Category Rules, Environmental Product Declarations and Responsible Sourcing Certifications.

1993–2003: PORTLAND CEMENT ASSOCIATION

A national trade association representing $15 billion cement industry

 

Managing Director, Market Promotion

 

Responsible for improving, expanding, and developing new markets for cement and concrete products in residential, commercial, and public construction.

  • Led a team of 21 engineers, architects, and scientists to promote cement and concrete products through communications, education, and government affairs.

  • Developed industry-wide marketing programs that increased market share of cement in residential, commercial, and public works construction.

  • Built strategic relationships with government and private industry that generated over $7 million of cooperative product research and technology transfer. Strategic partners included the Department of Housing and Urban Development, Department of Energy, Federal Railroad Administration, and National Association of Home Builders.

  • Implemented strategic marketing plan, which increased market share of concrete in residential walls and floors from 6% to 11%.

  • Created national/local cooperative marketing program to promote concrete walls and floors, including advertising and media relations, which increased homeowner awareness from 52% to 68% and homebuilder awareness from 74% to 95%.

  • Launched www.concretehomes.com and Concrete Homes magazine that increased awareness and improved perceptions of residential concrete products.

  • Developed a successful proposal for a $500,000 cooperative research program with Department of Housing and Urban Development that resulted in new national building code provisions for residential concrete wall systems.

  • Co-authored McGraw-Hill book titled Insulating Concrete Forms for Residential Design and Construction that provided design guidance for architects and engineers.

  • Developed education programs for video and CD format and presented seminars that trained contractors across the United States.

  • Developed computer software and publications that resulted in cost-effective design for tilt-up, precast, and cast-in-place concrete wall systems.

 

1986–1993: HANSEN LIND MEYER, INC.

A national 300-person architectural/engineering consulting firm specializing in major office, healthcare, criminal justice, education, and research facilities.

Director, Engineering

 

Responsible for providing structural design services for an office of 100 architects and engineers.

  • Managed 9-person engineering department that provided structural designs for commercial and institutional buildings from $5–$200 million.

  • Interfaced with clients throughout proposal, design, and construction phases. Clients included Northwestern Memorial Hospital, Rush-Presbyterian-St. Luke’s Medical Center, Johns Hopkins University, University of Chicago, State of Illinois, and State of Florida.

  • Developed and presented feasibility studies to building owners and developers that led to significant new business.

  • Performed structural designs and developed construction documents for steel, concrete, wood, and masonry buildings.

  • Used advanced computer software including GT Strudl, Etabs, RAMSteel, ADOSS, and AutoCAD to design and analyze new and existing structures.

  • Redesigned and reinforced existing structures to meet new program and loading requirements, resulting in millions of dollars in construction cost savings.
